The town of Saint-Yrieix, in the south of Haute Vienne

Saint-Yrieix is the most important town in the south of Haute Vienne, midway between the warmer atmosphere of Perigord and the bracing air of Limousin. It lies at the junction of three major urban centres: Limoges, Brive-la-Gaillarde and Périgueux.

The town of the printing-firm for French administration, of porcelain, of kaolin, of apples, of Limousin beef and of black-bottomed (cul noir) pork… revels in all these advantages. Its inhabitants are very proud of its quality of life and its environment.

Saint-Yrieix is well provided with a very rich and dynamic diversity of clubs and associations; many events (in particular, sporting, artistic and musical, etc.) are organised throughout the whole year.

Saint-Yrieix enjoys a favoured geographical situation. It is very close to the Dordogne, with its many well-known villages (Jumilhac-le-Grand and Hautefort for their chateaux, etc.). It is also very close to Corrèze (Ségur le Château and Pompadour, etc.).

The madeleines
The Saint-Yrieix madeleine is at least as well known as the Commercy madeleine. Rumour has it that it arrived in the region as a result of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella.
The limousin breed
The countryside around Saint-Yrieix still provides a base for most of the breeders for Limousin cattle shows.
The limousin apple
It is on the plateaux of Haut-Limousin that this golden wonder, cultivated at 300-500m altitude, draws its typical characteristics and its incomparable taste.
The culs noirs
(black-bottomed pigs)
This tender and tasty meat provides a culinary treat for gourmets.
St-Yrieix porcelain
The first royal porcelain factory in Limoges was created in 1771. Its exceptional quality means that production concentrates on luxury porcelain.
